Graham Cox

Biography

First joining the club in 1982, Graham Cox contributed more than 50 goals from midfield during two separate spells with Stevenage Borough. He initially came to us from just up the road after being released by Cambridge United. Born and bred in the town, who knew that he’d go on towards 300 appearances in Boro’ colours; featuring for us in all but two seasons during the 1980s. Just the 1980-1 (the year before joining) and 1986-7 seasons are missing his name in the end-of-year rollcall.

For all his service, however, Cox left the club in summer 1990. It was the year that a new era dawned at Broadhall Way; Paul Fairclough coming in and turbo-charging our rise up the pyramid. With the success that was to come our way, it was a shame that Cox wasn’t to be a part of it – if only to recognise the long service that he’d given us; helping to fully establish Boro’ as an Isthmian League side at the time.

Graham Cox: Before Boro’

After making his way through local ranks, a scout from Aston Villa no less spotted Cox as he turned out for Derby Way. He had a trial at Villa Park, which sadly didn’t end up with an offer of an apprenticeship. That’s when Cambridge United came in for him; taking him on as a professional without hesitation. After two seasons at the Abbey, the club let him go for what one Boro’ programme calls “economy reasons”. We think that means they were skint.
