The 1980-1 season was Stevenage Borough’s first in senior football and it all seemed like it was a doddle once this particular race had been run. Starting on 16 August 1980 with a home match against ON Chenecks, Boro’ went on to score in the next 21 games; Derek Montgomery‘s men finding life in United Counties League Division One pretty easy.
No result showed that more than what remains our record win; an 11-1 hammering over British Timken Athletic on 6 December. Boro’ went on to win all but nine of their league fixtures that term, scoring more than a ton of goals in the process. And the league title was not the only piece of silverware that season.
In marking a pretty impressive debut season, Stevenage Borough added the United Counties League Cup to their pristine new trophy cabinet. We were up and running in senior football; it’s fair to say that many more good times were to follow too. The 1980-1 campaign was perhaps just the appetiser…
