Who are Cottingham?
Not to be confused with the same place in East Yorkshire, this Northamptonshire version of Cottingham are very hard to track down. But for glimpses of a ‘new’ club in more recent times, we can find very little about the history of the club we came up against in our early years. All we do have to lean on is the very reliable Football Club History Database; putting the club on the map in 1979 as having joined the United Counties League one season before Boro’ arrived.
In their debut season, they were promoted to Division One. The catch is that, from 1980 onwards, there was no Division Two anymore. So, they were promoted from a division that ceased to exist. And that’s a bit weird. Anyway, onwards. Cottingham could be found in United Counties League Division One for the duration after that; going close to the title twice before finally winning the pot in 2000. It didn’t, however, win them promotion to the Premier Division.
They continued on in Division One, but the tale was about to come to an end. In 2004, they added Corby to the front of their name. It did little good. In their one and only season under the new brand, they came seventh out of 18th. More importantly, they folded at the end of that campaign.
