Andy Hughes is one of Boro’s first great servants; the midfielder putting in a shift during our formative years as a club. Based on what we know, he first signed for us in 1979 as we stepped up to senior status – albeit without a competition that matched our new level. It meant that, by the time the 1980-1 United Counties League campaign was underway, he already had a number of appearances to his name. Alas, we don’t know how many as our records for that time aren’t too complete
Like Boro’, Hughes made the leap up to senior status with ease. It was vindication for his talent and reward for his loyalty. He went on to skipper the club too; eventually setting the record for the most appearances. Now of course, this was during fledgling times for the club. The record has long since been broken in the years that followed. Repeatedly. Even four-fold. In 1985, it was time for his era to come to an end. Andy Hughes was on the move; leaving us and heading south down the old A1 to Knebworth.
At the moment, we only have limited data for the 1979-80 season.
