Vauxhall Motors (both of them) aren’t our only car-based link; Ford Sports a side we faced off against back in the early 1980s. Later called Daventry United, this team represented the car company’s Daventry works in the United Counties League. In what ended up being a shock outcome, the Motormen beat us in the early days of the 1980-1 season; Boro’ going down 3-2 at home in a result that bucked the trend at the time.

We got our swift revenge, however; knocking them out of the UCL Cup and then crowing our title win with a 5-0 away win; a game that got switched to BHW so we could be handed the trophy.

The best years came after we parted. After twice winning the Division One title themselves in the early 1990s, they were promoted to the Premier Division at the second attempt. The Motormen won the Premier Division title twice around the turn of the century too. In 2007, back down to Division One they went; changing name at the same time to Daventry United. Within three years, the club made it back into the Premier Division. Another three years on and they folded.

Ford Sports: The Facts

Who are Ford Sports?

The club first took flight in 1968 as Ford Sports Daventry; making the step up to the United Counties League in 1977. Success came relatively quickly too. At the end of their second season in the competition, they finished runners-up. With that, promotion to Division One was theirs. Had it been a season earlier, there would have been a face-off with Vauxhall Motors would you believe. The Luton-based side, however, moved to the South Midlands League.

Division One is where the Daventry outfit would stay for the next few years. Division Two disappeared in 1980, by the way. It wasn’t until 1996 when Ford Sports won the Division One title and gained promotion to the Premier Division.
