The Gittings family have done much for Boro’s fortunes over the years, with midfielder Peter putting in his fair share of work to help our cause. He might not have the scoring record of Martin, but who does? And, sure, someone has to do the legwork. That’s just what you got with this industrious guy. He had to suffer the agony of missing out on our 1980-1 United Counties League Division One promotion party due to a serious injury.
Lacking confidence when making his return (according to one matchday programme), manager Derek Montgomery moved Gittings to left-back. It was one way to get him back up to speed and it had the desired effect. While he left the club at the end of the 1981-2 campaign, it wasn’t the end of the story. He was back wearing Boro’s red and white later during the 1980s; a regular in the 1985-6 season but appearances few and far between in the 1986-7 campaign bringing the curtain down on his time as a player with us for good.
