Derek Montgomery became manager of a fledgling Stevenage Borough side in 1979, the same year we made the transition from youth to senior status. He took charge of Boro’ in the Wallspan Southern Combination League; playing on roped-off pitches at King George V Playing Fields before moving to Broadhall Way.
The club’s return to its spiritual home by the A602 coincided with entry into the United Counties League. Monty’s side were no match for 1980-1 Division One opponents; Boro’ surging to promotion at the first time of asking. We also won the United Counties League Cup.
Life in the Premier Division was a little tougher however; two 12th place finishes as good as it got in Montgomery’s time at the club.
