Go on, we dare you; find us another man who can claim to be as prolific a goalscorer as Martin Gittings was across his four spells with Stevenage Borough. You will, of course, struggle with this. After making his debut at the start of the 1981-2 season, the counter didn’t come to a rest until October 1994 – 217 goals later.
The potent scorer knocked in goals for a number of other clubs in his time too. Baldock Town, Hitchin Town and Barnet; never mind the fact they were (at one time or another) rivals of ours, Gitts scored for ’em all. And it was from the Bees that he would return to Boro’ in December 1986. In addition to going past the 200 milestone during the 1993-4 Diadora League Premier Division campaign, Gitts was also named Player of the Year. It was a gong that he had won a mere eight years before with us too.
It’s fair to say the 1990s saw Gitts as his most prolific for us. After coming back to us in time for the 1990-1 season, he knocked in a staggering 119 goals between then and his final outing in a Boro’ shirt. The 1991-2 campaign was surely a personal highlight, with 44 goals to his name that term. It’s a club record that still stands, much like his final tally of 217. You won’t find anyone comes close to breaking that, we bet.
