Our 11-1 drubbing in 1980 means British Timken Athletic will almost certainly forever stay in Boro’s history books. All we know ourselves about ’em is that they turn up in the United Counties League in 1961. After coming second in the Division Two at the first attempt, the club went one better the next campaign; securing promotion to Division One. Three years in, they were relegated. Somehow, they finished fourth bottom despite letting in 137 goals. Back to Division Two it was, however.
Of course, they did find a way into Division One by the time we first met in 1980. But that’s more because the divisions got a rebrand. Athletic didn’t go up nor down levels for the rest of their days; a timeline that seems to stop at the end of the 1989-90 season.
