Royston Town
You must go back to 1992 for our last competitive game against Royston Town. And that was only in the Eastern Floodlit League. Of course, we hope little changes since we wrote this – otherwise we’ve given ourselves more admin to do. The chances of us meeting in the near future are slim, to be fair. By that last tango in 1992, however, the Crows were almost certainly the one team we’d come across more than any other since stepping up to the senior football plate in 1980.
In that 12-year period between 1980 and 1992, we faced off with Royston Town on no fewer than 23 occasions don’t you know. From just up the road, the Crows are a team against whom Boro’ have – more often than not – been on the winning side. We’ve traded managers and players over the years too. Our one and only defeat against the Crows came during our 1987-8 Knights Floodlit League campaign; a competition that accounts for almost half of the games between us to date.
It’s a long time since we took part in it – and played the Crows in a competitive match. Coincidence?

Who are Royston Town?
The Crows are as old as the dawn of time. Or the dawn of football. One of the two. But their 1875 formation date is a significant one. It means, allegedly, that only Hitchin Town and Bishop’s Stortford are older than them as far as Herts is concerned. That’s not bad. Mind you, it’s also claimed that it wasn’t until 1970 until they won their first big honour – the Herts County Premier League title. Hmm. That’s quite a long time. And not a huge honour in the eyes of many.
Nonetheless, the Crows set about making up for lost time by winning that same title twice more in the 1970s. It gave them the confidence to ditch the competition in 1978; turning up in the South Midlands League for a few campaigns, before chancing their arms at the Isthmian League. The Crows actually joined Division Two North ahead of the 1984-5 season – just like Boro’. And it was just another arena that – at the time – Boro’ would go into battle against them.
How to get to Royston Town
By Road
The quickest and most convenient route is to head north on the A1(M) (or otherwise) and join the A505 towards Royston. After 11.3 miles and travelling around the outskirts of the town, take the third exit at the roundabout to join the southbound A10.
Go through one roundabout and, once you’ve come opposite St Mary’s Catholic School, turn left into Garden Walk.
By Rail
Station: ROYSTON
Services to: STEVENAGE
Leave the station and come out onto the main road. Turn right and then left into Queens Road. A road will appear from the right in a v-shaped junction, turn right down here and then left onto Stamford Avenue. This takes you to Melbourn Road, where you’re turning right and then left soon after for Garden Walk.
Parking
The car park at Garden Walk is on the small side, so you’re unlikely to have much luck with it. The club also asks that you do not park in local side streets. Instead, use one of the car park options in Royston town centre.
