After going so close in the playoffs the previous season, hopes were high that Stevenage would be able to continue that run in 2012-3. And, for a while, it looked as if things were going well; Boro’ trailing closely behind pacesetters Tranmere Rovers into the autumn. It all seemed to fall apart, however; Gary Smith‘s side sliding down the table at quite an alarming rate. And the man himself couldn’t quite put his finger on the reason either.
It probably didn’t help that this was now a completely different Boro’ squad from the year before. But Smith lost his job without ever having a full season in charge of the club. There were, to be fair, valid concerns about our survival hopes though. It just so happened that Graham Westley was available once more; Preston losing patience with his less orthodox style of management.
We have little cup progress to report on from this season. It doesn’t quite do justice to the fact that we won a League Cup tie for the first time ever, but ho hum…
