Who Are... Ebbsfleet United FC?
Defying the BoroGuide predictions for 2006/7, Ebbsfleet United finished the season ten places above where it was thought they might, missing out on the playoffs by a mere four points. An appearance at the new Wembley Stadium in the FA Trophy final was only denied by defeat to Kidderminster Harriers in the semi-final, and all in all it was a fairly successful season for the Kent side, then known as Gravesend & Northfleet.
In 2007/8, it was a case of all-change at the club though. As the Blue Square Premier name replaced Nationwide Conference, so did Ebbsfleet to former name Gravesend & Northfleet. It was a change that couldn't have foresaw what would ultimately be a revolution in football club ownership, as MyFootballClub took control of the club with 35,000 investors. It was a change that seemed to work, however, as the club brushed off competition from champions-elect Aldershot, and Torquay United to lift the FA Trophy for the first time in their history.
A promising start in the 2008/9 season quickly tailed off in the middle part of the campaign, and preparations for the 2009/10 season were hampered by a series of departures. Coupled with an on/off transfer saga involving three players and York City, it made the average football fan wonder how Liam Daish could motivate himself to work in a scenario where thousands made the decisions above his head. The threat of reduced MyFootballClub membership brought about concerns of reduced revenue, and it is conceivable that Ebbsfleet United may find life a struggle moving into 2010.
