It was very much a case of Graham Westley finally getting his man; chasing the signing of Rocky Baptiste since arriving at Stevenage in January 2003. The front man became a bit of a national icon thanks to his goal in Farnborough’s 5-1 loss at Arsenal in the 2002-3 FA Cup. He was also scoring regularly for the Hampshire team at that time too. But it had looked as if Southend United would secure his services in summer 2003.
Westley made the move to tie up a free transfer, however; adding another senior striker to the squad. With him were Elding, Battersby and Richards; all competing for places up top on the opening day. Baptiste wouldn’t help his cause by often flattering to deceive in Boro’ colours. After making himself a semi-regular presence up top, goals didn’t come all that easily. Good performances were also at a fair old premium.
He did have one day in the sun, seeing off eventual champions Chester City at the Deva Stadium almost on his own. Such halcyon showings, however, were rarely seen again.
