Well-liked, hard-working and a flippin’ good goalscorer; you can’t doubt the importance of Steve Armsby to us in the mid-1980s. In his first spell with the club, his goals ensured we took to life in the Isthmian League like a duck to water. And he was part of the squad that secured promotion at the end of the 1985-6 campaign. That first spell came to a close in the back end of the 1986-7 campaign. In our first season without him, we were relegated. Is that coincidence?
He returned at the start of the 1990s as reserve team boss; turning out for us in a handful of games when the need arose.
