“I’m absolutely over the moon to sign here!” – there was no hiding the happiness of Charlie Carter at rocking up at the Lamex in summer 2019. Arriving for an undisclosed fee from National League side Chesterfield, the midfielder was among a number of pre-season recruits and yet another piece in the Dino Maamria jigsaw puzzle. Even better was Carter’s penchant for finding the net, which is never a bad thing. Maybe one for the future to begin with, there was no doubt that Carter came to us with all the right attributes to make it big.
Carter’s form at Chesterfield was certainly enough to get him noticed; scoring goals and driving at the heart of the opposition defence. He only moved up to The Proact Stadium in summer 2018, with one season all it took for pique our interest in the lad. There were glimpses during his time with us that he’d kick on and become an important player. Yet, that didn’t happen. Injuries got in the way, as did poor results and Covid-19. By the time the 2021-2 season came to an end, Carter struggled to even get a look in off the bench under now-boss Steve Evans.
It was probably best for both parties when, in summer 2022, Carter’s time with us came to an end.

The deal that brought him to the Lamex almost certainly earned our old rivals a bit of cash in the process too; Woking admitting they had an interest in the midfielder’s future after agreeing to sell him to Chesterfield. Let’s hope the price was a small one worth paying as far as they’re concerned…
