Who Are... Eastbourne Borough FC?
The brief encounters between Stevenage Borough and Eastbourne Borough in the 2003/4 FA Cup have proved to be a prelude to what will possibly become a regular fixture on the Blue Square Premier calendar. The Sussex Boro' come up to the Blue Square Premier at what was the second time of asking; they nearly made it a couple of seasons ago but lost out to Altrincham in the only instance of a North/South playoff to determine the third club promoted from the feeder leagues. Since the allocation was extended to four teams, two from the North and South respectively, Eastbourne were given another crack at it in 2008 and duly delivered.
The club visited Broadhall Way in May 2008 to take on Hampton & Richmond in a tightly-contested Blue Square South playoff, and it was the Sussex outfit which won the right to go up alongside champions Lewes - ironically enough their fiercest rivals, and a fixture that drew a huge attendance last season. And now attention will be turned to the biggest challenge the club has faced in their short history.
Coming into the Blue Square Premier at a time when the competition is as strong as ever was inevitably a challenge to keep Boro' on their toes to say the very least. Their inexperience and less-than-notable cup runs in recent years may not have stood them in particularly good stead for the 2008/9 campaign, but they performed admirably and were one of the very few (if not the only) teams to do the double over Stevenage Borough. Most of the 2009/10 season should be played out at the bottom end of the table, but it is a relegation battle they survived and not by the most comfortable of margins.
