Stevenage boss Graham Westley made a huge statement at the end of the January 2011 transfer window by signing of Craig Reid; then one of the sharpest shooters in the Blue Square Bet Premier during the first half of 2010-1. With a prolific scoring record for Newport County after joining the Welsh side in 2008 (initially on loan), Reid’s exploits at the top end of non-league football saw him pick up the Blue Square South Player of the Year as County secured promotion.
And after netting 18 times during the first half of the 2010-1 season, it was no surprise that Football League clubs started showing interest. But it was Boro’ who nabbed their man for a “record” fee; Charlie Griffin and Yemi Odubade moving in the opposite direction on loan. Goals were hard to come by, however; the return of nine goals in more than 50 appearances not quite what was sought after. Aldershot Town and Reid’s former Newport manager Dean Holdsworth came calling in summer 2012 and he moved on.
