Experienced central defender Mark Albrighton joined Stevenage Borough in summer 2008 from Blue Square Premier rivals Cambridge United. During his stay at the Abbey Stadium, he featured a fair bit in their push for promotion to League Two. But that ended in defeat to Exeter City in the playoff final at Wembley. Before that, Albrighton won the Conference with Doncaster Rovers back in 2003. The capture of Albrighton did surprise a few, not least given the role he had at Cambridge.
But Graham Westley turned to him in order to bolster our defence. The pair knew each other from the time Albrighton joined Rushden & Diamonds on loan in 2007 while GW was in charge at Nene Park. With competition from others at here, Albrighton played a vital role; supporting the perceived first-choice four throughout the 2009-10 title-winning campaign. It was Albrighton’s last at Boro’, however; Boro’ releasing him that summer to find first team football elsewhere.
Stats do not include expunged Chester City fixtures in 2009-10.
