Biography

In the door just in time for the 2025-26 campaign was goalkeeper Filip Marschall. The stopper came to us from Premier League side Aston Villa; the amount spent – as is often the case now – not made known. But it sure was a statement all the same. In the 2024-5 League One season, we’d had Murphy Cooper on loan. Here, with Marschall, we’d gone out and made it all permanent – effectively ending Taye Ashby-Hammond‘s rule as our number one. His stay with us would end up only being a short one; just a single season in fact. But it’s testament to his impact as to why that was the case.

A solid defensive display with numerous clean sheets throughout that 2025-26 season helped propel Boro’ into the unlikely spot of League One playoff contenders. With it came attention and admiration from afar. Alas, we didn’t quite make it through to the end of the 2026 summer transfer window. Millwall swooped in on deadline day with a club record fee (for us). And that’s not an opportunity we’re free to pass up. Off he went, then, and prompted some scrambling around to ensure our goalkeeping cupboard was still well-stocked. A move well-earned, a farewell certainly fond, a sense of timing… less than ideal.

Filip Marschall: Before Boro’

Marschall started his career at hometown club, Cambridge City. His talent at an early age, however, saw Villa in for him in 2018. Fun fact: up until he was 13-years-old, Marschall was stepping out as a defender. Anyway, he’d get regular action in the youth teams at Villa Park. And he did get to make his debut for them during the 2023-4 Europa Conference League programme. But the bulk of his first team opportunities would come out on loan. He had two spells at Gateshead, followed by stints at MK Dons and latterly Crewe Alexandra.
