Biography
A forward with plenty of non-league know-how, Martyn Sperrin arrived in January 1985 from near neighbours Hertford Town. The player came from a footballing family; his father Billy Sperrin turning out for Brentford and Barnet among others in his career. His spell at Broadhall Way wouldn’t be a long one. This doesn’t translate to being an unsuccessful one, you understand. In little over three months, Sperrin netted nine times at a rate that wasn’t a million miles off one every two games.
Martyn Sperrin: Before Boro’
In Martyn’s own career, Barnet also count as one of his previous clubs before coming to Broadhall Way. It was down the A505 where the forward arguably had his biggest break, however; making one Football League and one League Cup appearance for Luton Town. The reason for leaving Kenilworth Road, so it goes, is the arrival of David Pleat as manager. Having joined the Hatters alongside Brian Stein, it’s perhaps a case of what might have been for the player.
