East Thurrock United
Two wins out of two is our record against East Thurrock United; both of our past encounters coming in the FA Cup. We won’t be getting the chance to improve on that – or, indeed, ruin it. Just a few weeks into the 2023-4 season, the Rocks folded due to ‘historic debt’. At the time, they were members of the Isthmian League; falling away from their highest-ever placing in the pyramid upon winning promotion to National League South in 2016. That odyssey would only last three years, however.
As for our record against them, our first our our two FA Cup wins was a narrow 1-0 win. That came in our 1990-1 Preliminary Round tie when they were in the Essex Senior League. The second of the two wins, meanwhile, is much more convincing to look back on; a 5-1 demolition in the 1993-4 Third Qualifying Round. By then, they’d made the step up to the Isthmian League and plotting their rise up the pyramid. On two occasions in later years, the Rocks would even go as far as Round One proper. But it wouldn’t be us meeting them either time.

Club History
Who are East Thurrock United?
In 1969, football fans in the Corringham and Stanford-le-Hope area were being frustrated by the lack of a senior non-league club in the area. So, that’s where the Rocks come in; formed to fill that gap. It’s maybe fair to say the club bounced about a bit in those early years; first in the Southern Essex Combination, then in the Greater London League’s reserve section from 1970. The competition merged with the Metropolitan League in 1971, which saw them stay in the reserve section of the new Metropolitan-London League.
The Rocks won the division in that first season, which pulled them up to the senior divisions; winning the Division Two title straight off the bat and moving into Division One. Another league merger in 1975 led to the creation of the London Spartan League, with the Rocks placed into Division Two. It would be the case until 1978; a restructuring of the competition leaving the club in the Premier Division instead. Not that it’d matter in any case. The Essex Senior League came calling in 1979.
In this new environment, the Rocks took a while to get started but soon became one of the stronger sides in the competition. They fell short of the championship by three points in 1989. It’s agonising enough. But worse still was to follow in a weird way in 1992. On paper, the club finished in third position. “So what”, we hear you ask. Well, the top three sides all finished on 66 points. It came down to goal difference – and the Rocks lost out on second by two goals and the title by eight goals.
On the flip side, they did move up to the Isthmian League that summer.
