Biography
After starting his career at Tottenham Hotspur, defender Greg Howell found himself at Boro’ in the early 1990s – but only played a few times for us. In a match programme from February 1993, boss Paul Fairclough explains why: “Greg Howell has signed a contract to play football in New Zealand and, at this moment, is in ‘flight'”. Well, it’s alright for some – innit!
There’s a bit of confusion here because Howell himself told a St Albans City website that his time in New Zealand came before us. We’re inclined to believe Cloughie’s words from the time, as you might expect. But you can guess from above that Howell’s career did see him at Clarence Park for a bit. Enfield too. For us, it’s a case of what might’ve been,
