Not content with a good start to the 2025-6 campaign, Boro’ decided to go out and secure the services of forward Jovan Malcolm. It was clearly a sign of a finely-tuned transfer strategy. Why else would we splash out a “five-figure” fee for the player? Don’t take that be to a negative assessment, however. Malcolm had earned his stripes thanks to his promising spell with Gateshead in the National League. And they rightly didn’t want to lose an important player, so the compensation had to be worth it’s salt. Long story short – we wanted him, so we paid for him.
Jovan Malcolm: Before Boro’
Malcolm’s time at the Heed had lasted less than a year, having signed in September 2024. There, he had started to find a rhythm in front of goal that wasn’t quite as evident as at previous clubs. Mind you, it can be hard to get into a flow when you’re out on loan several times. That was the case with first club West Brom, who sent him to salubrious places like Accrington, Solihull, and Cheltenham. With his Baggies deal up in 2024, the player left the club on a free; making just a handful of outings for the West Midlands side. And, so, it was off to Gateshead.
