You can say that Jerry Abbiss had the honour of being one of our very first senior players; signing for the club in summer 1979. He was among a number of lads to sign up to the all-new senior Stevenage Borough team for the 1979-80 season. It’s just that we didn’t find a league to play in. Abbiss wouldn’t ultimately stick with us for a second season, however. The player no longer appears to be on the books as we prepared for our United Counties League debut in 1980. He’d actually narrowly avoided harsher sanctions for his part in “serious breaches in club discipline” when away with Boro’ in Germany in Easter 1980. Three players were sacked, but Abbiss – at the time – was only suspended and/or reprimanded.
