Ah, yes – pray silence for the glorious return of a competition that’s going to turn England into world-beaters and earn Shaun Harvey a knighthood. The Checkatrade Trophy is rearing its fugly head for the second time this season. And it pours a bucket of cold water over any hopes that, somehow, our 3-1 defeat at Leyton Orient in late August would mean an early exit. But the truth of the matter is that we’re not even halfway through.
By the end of this latest indulgence, however, we could be 90 minutes from washing our hands of it. Over in a parallel universe, this could well be the most anticipated match in Boro’s 40-year history. Here on planet Earth, however, it has all the hallmarks of those behind-closed-doors friendly we sometimes play between weekends. Except the doors, for this one, will be open to everyone if you want to stick your head round. If you fancy it.
Stevenage v Brighton & Hove Albion U23s: Meh
So, how about those Brighton & Hove Albion U23s eh? This meeting is *actually* going to appear in the history books as a first-team fixture. For us, at least. Of course, our guests have absolutely no obligation on that front. But don’t hate the player, hate the game as far as that goes. Let’s face it – what can we say about these guys? We know nowt about them. And why would we? This isn’t the side that’s fourth in the Championship table.
No, this is a side that’s 10th in Premier League 2 Division 2.
Now, we’re not being that scientific about this – but we think this could be the first time a ‘competitive’ match at the Lamex attracted less than 1000 since we beat Workington in the FA Trophy in February 2010. And it may be pushing it to get as many as 687 through the gates here. What do you think? This could, after all, be the football fix you’ve been waiting for since our jaunt to Newport was given a rainy heave-ho. Who knows?
