Many fans were happy when the signing of Mathaeus Roberts was confirmed in summer 2025 off the back of an impressive pre-season. An attacking midfielder by trade, the player was one of a few trialists to feature for us. Few, however, showed quite as much impact and goalscoring ability as Roberts. It was inevitable, therefore, that Boro’ fans were wondering whether we were leaving matters to chance by not securing his services immediately. News that we’d secured his services would ultimately come in late July that summer.

By the end of the 2025-26 season, however, was “why”. Roberts made a grand total of two sub appearances for us – both in cup competitions and to no great end. He soon found himself out on loan to try and get him some match time (meaningful, that is). No doubt there was a point or two for the midfielder to prove as he looked to establish himself at Football League level after leaving Ipswich Town U21s in summer 2025. But it didn’t come to fruition. And there was a sense of inevitability about his release when announced in summer 2026.
