"He totally deserves his opportunity in the Football League," declared Tamworth boss Andy Morrell after Boro' signed Danny Newton

“He totally deserves his opportunity in the Football League” – that was the verdict of Tamworth boss Andy Morrell after Boro’ swooped to sign striker Danny Newton. The fourth new arrival of the 2017 close season, Newton came to us after a prolific campaign in which he scored 29 goals for the National League North side. With Boro’ no strangers to unearthing goalscoring talent in the lower leagues, it was nothing short of a great find by gaffer Darren Sarll.

Newton’s form during the 2016-7 campaign had impressed scouts at Jamie Vardy’s V9 academy, according to the Tamworth Herald. It had also captured the attention of a good few Football League clubs too; Grimsby Town among a number of clubs reported to be keen on signing the player. Boro’ came out on top in the chase for his signature, however, and continued to strengthen the forward line ahead of the 2017-8 League Two season. As he arrived at the Lamex, hopes and expectations were high.

Newton took to life in the League like a duck to water; making the most appearances (50) and scoring the most goals (16) during the 2017-8 season. It had looked as if he’d caught the attention of scouts from other teams, but Boro’ held on. Frustratingly, 2018-9 was not so prolific. Injury limited the striker to just 29 appearances. It was annoying because his presence may have got us over the line into the playoffs that year.

Danny Newton: Before Boro’

Before signing for the Lambs in May 2015, Newton had turned out most recently for Leamington. And, prior to that, there were stints at Brackley Town, Hinckley United and Nuneaton Town. No stranger to scoring at each of those clubs, Newton had truly honed his scoring abilities in non-league circles. The step up to the Football League, therefore, was a case of when, rather than if, it’d happen.
