Did Luis Fernandez get a proper chance at Boro’? We’re not too sure about that; the young defender let go by us in summer 2022. It was a bit of a change of direction from when the centre back was thrust into first-team action at the start of the 2019-20 season. He’d been a regular for our U18s, and came into that campaign with the honour having secured a squad number. Injuries to senior players may be the reason his chance came along. But his first impression was a good one; taking to the first team like a proverbial duck to water.
As those senior player returned, it was natural that Fernandez would fall down the pecking order. But knowing there’s a number on your shirt is always good to have. It was the case going into the 2020-1 season too. The problem was that he couldn’t then force his way into a Boro’ side who weren’t exactly rock solid at the back. Out the player went on loan to gain first team experience. It included a spell at Oxford City on loan in October 2021; a chance to gain regular first team action and further his development under the watchful eye of David Oldfield.
It didn’t have the desired effect for whatever reason. He gained more experience on loan at National League side King’s Lynn Town during the 2021-2 season. But the powers that be didn’t deem it to be enough for him to stay on the books at the Lamex. In summer 2022, his name was one of many on our Released list.
