If you ever wondered where Rushden & Diamonds got their unusual name from, Irthlingborough Diamonds is one half of the reason. It’s the merger between them and Rushden Town in 1992 that created the club. But, like Town, we already had a reason to know the Diamonds in their own right. Our promotion to the United Counties League in 1981 arguably caught them in their pomp too; the Diamonds ending second-best in our first-ever campaign at that level. The season after, they went one better and lifted the title.

But the good times couldn’t last. By the 1992 merger, they were finishing in the bottom half of the table.

Irthlingborough Diamonds: The Facts

Who are Irthlingborough Diamonds?

The tale of the original Diamonds starts in 1946. We don’t know a huge amount about what happened after that, except to say they pop up in the United Counties League from 1964. As champions of Division One in 1971, the club didn’t get promoted. Well, they did. But it wasn’t until the following season when they ended in third position. Between 1976 and 1983, the Diamonds won the title on three occasions – and recorded a number of strong finishes otherwise. They also reached the FA Vase semi-finals twice during that time too.
