There isn’t a significant distance between us and Potton United off the pitch. But, on the pitch, we have drifted poles apart. The Royals were two-time champions of the United Counties League Premier Division in the 1980s. Neither times were on our watch, however. In fact, we’d been out of the picture for two clear terms before their first success in 1986-7. Mind you, we found them a tough nut to crack when we were equals; recording a trio of wins from six league encounters our record.

To be honest, there was also a seventh meeting to cap it some time after we’d been parted. The Royals won it, though; ending our 1989-90 FA Vase run in their second title campaign.

Club History

Who are Potton United?

The story of the Royals dates back to 1943; the club coming into existence during World War Two. Once the conflict was over, they joined the South Midlands League and did quite well. Their lowest finish across a six-year period was sixth out of 16 members. It prompted them to apply to the Parthenon League in 1955. Sadly, the application didn’t get the green light – and it meant the Royals had a season without league duties. After that hiatus, they filled the gap with the Central Alliance.

In 1961, the Royals were accepted into the United Counties League. Their progress was pretty unremarkable for the first two decades or so; the club gradually forcing themselves into the top half more regularly. That’d ultimately culminate in title success during the mid-1980s. Coming into the 21st century, however, their luck wasn’t always in. There was a couple of relegations; the second of which in 2009 was a permanent state of affairs that lasted until they joined the Spartan South Midlands League in 2018.
