Biography

Delvin Stevens is one of those ultra-rare folks; someone who played for all three Stevenage football teams during his career. A loyal servant to Boro’, we understand that Stevens was a defender by trade; starting his career at Stevenage Town during the 1960s. He’d move on and see action at Barnet, Cambridge City, and Arlesey Town too. But we reckon Stevenage was where his footballing heart lay. Indeed, he turned out at Stevenage Athletic during the 1970s. Now, we know what happened to that club – but it didn’t put him off joining Boro’ ranks when the ‘new’ club came calling.

It wasn’t just on the pitch that Stevens served the club. He also performed coaching and stand-in managerial duties in his time at Broadhall Way. As youth team boss at Boro’, he delivered success in the form of the East Anglia Trophy and the Herts County Cup. And, during our troubled 1987-8 campaign, it was Stevens who stepped into lead the club after Frank Cornwell stepped down as boss. His record as caretaker manager wasn’t half bad either; delivering three wins in his first three games; ending his spell with four wins and two draws from eight games before John Bailey arrived.

In July 2022, Delvin Stevens sadly passed away at the age of 74.
