A midfielder by trade, Tony Shields signed for Boro’ on loan from Peterborough United in January 2002 – and a short loan it was. Over the course of a month, the Strabane-born player appeared just three times. He made his debut as a substitute late on in a defeat at Doncaster Rovers, before missing a couple of games – then starting twice in a row. He netted once too; a rather decent effort from memory as Boro’ romped to a 4-1 win against Forest Green Rovers in our Nationwide Conference date in mid-February.
We presume the loan deal was only meant to last for a month and back to Posh he went. Short and sweet, eh?
Tony Shields: After Boro’
Shields remained on the books at London Road until 2004 – with a loan spell at Aldershot Town in the mix in 2003. He must’ve done a good job at the Rec, to be fair; the Shots picking him up on a permanent deal when he left Posh. Mind you, the midfielder’s time with the Shots was brief too. Later in 2004, Shields moved back across the water; joining his previous club Omagh Town at first. Over the next six years-or-so, he turned out for teams on both sides of the border. Shields was last seen (to the best of our knowledge, at least) playing for Finn Harps.
