Brought in amid a goalkeeping crisis before a 1988 FA Cup tie against Burnham, the helping hands of Brian Aldridge ended up costing us. It turned out that he wasn’t eligible to play in that match. So, despite us winning the Third Round Qualifying tie, Burnham got our place in the next round. For what it’s worth, Burnham didn’t get much further; losing 3-2 at home in a replay against Dulwich Hamlet.
Aldridge had been drafted in at the eleventh hour from Baldock Town after Boro’ were left without a goalkeeper. Keith Allinson picked up an injury in his first game after Mark Klimek had left the club. Confusion over registration rules, however, left Boro’ to incur the wrath of the FA. And so it came to be that we went out of the competition. Mind you, only one other side ended that cup campaign undefeated – and that was winners Liverpool.
