Biography

As the start of the 2026-27 season drew closer, Boro’ announced the signing of goalkeeper Daniel Barden. He was – at the time – our fifth arrival of that summer. In-between the sticks was not perhaps the first position you’d think of when looking at where to strengthen. Mind you, it did make sense to bring in a stopper with a degree of experience to act as understudy to Filip Marschall. And that need was made all the more greater by the expectation that young Max Woodford would go out on loan.

Barden came to us from Norwich City; a club at which he’d been for six years. In his time, he’d earned international stripes with the Wales U19 and U21 sides. How much he could reasonably expect to feature in the first team with Marschall ahead of him? It wasn’t thought of as being likely at the time of his arrival. But you never know, eh? After all, an injury to a goalkeeper saw us roll through about a million of them during the second half of the 2022-23 campaign. Lessons learned, and all that…

Daniel Barden: Before Boro’

Six years at Carrow Road didn’t exactly yield much in the way of opportunity. There were a spattering of appearances, mainly at the start of his senior career there. But, as the years went by, loan spells became his main source of action. There is a fairly large caveat in that, however. A testicular cancer diagnosis in 2021 saw Barden take a break from the game – which is understandable to say the least. The good news is that he came through the treatment and was able to restart his career.

A loan move to Maidstone United was his first move after returning to action. That was followed in August 2024 by a loan move to Swindon Town. The Canaries cut that one short in March 2o25, although the reason why isn’t exactly clear. It’s not like he was sat on the bench indefinitely with the Robins. Anyway, that’s one for the two respective clubs. For the 2025-26 campaign, Barden wound up at Dagenham & Redbridge for a bit. And then it was announced that he wouldn’t be getting a new deal from Norwich.
