A summer 2018 signing for the Boro’, forward Alex Reid came to the club from Fleetwood Town after impressing in three pre-season friendlies. At six foot three, he’s a forward that certainly brought height to our front line and his scoring prowess had already been shown in those friendlies he impressed in. Coming in at the age of 22, boss Dino Maamria saw plenty of potential in the forward.

His time with the Cod Army only yielded one first team appearance, but loan time at Wrexham and Solihull Moors showed his capabilities. Indeed, at the time of his arrival, Maamria said: “He is still young, a pure athlete and there is loads of room for him to improve as a player.”

He saw some action in his debut season with us, but it was in the National League with AFC Fylde where he’d play most in 2018-9. Reid’s efforts (and goals) helped the club to the playoffs and a shot at joining us in League Two; just falling short at the final hurdle against Salford City. After it looked as if he might have a role to play with us in 2019-20, Boro’ found the going tough and started going through the managers. By that time, Reid was already heading back to the National League on loan.

With his contract up for renewal in summer 2020, Alex Revell was now in charge. And he had some tough decisions to make. The club’s finances had been hit by the curtailment of the season due to coronavirus. And our poor league form forced a rethink too. Reid ended up being one of 22 players released by the club; maybe one of the unlucky ones who had more to offer, but wouldn’t – ultimately – get that chance.

Alex Reid: Before Boro’

It was with Wrexham that Alex Reid first caught Maamria’s attention, or so the story goes. In his time with the Welsh club, he scored three times in 18 National League appearances. For Solihull Moors, meanwhile, the same tally of goals from 10 outings. At Boro’, a chance then to prove himself at League level; a chance not necessarily afforded at Fleetwood.
