One half of a double signing made just before the start of the 2002-3 season, Neil Smith came with the reputation of a “gritty” midfielder. That was proved immediately as he got booked on debut against Northwich in the first game of that campaign. Smith’s career sheet before us reads quite nicely; spells at Spurs, Fulham and Reading nothing to sniff at. What happened in the Broadhall Way chapter, however, was somewhat less exciting.
After four starts and four sub appearances, he moved on – though his time wasn’t aided by a tricky knee injury. Smith moved on to join rivals Woking, where he enjoyed a slightly longer period – despite still suffering from injury. After a successful time at Kingfield, he moved to Welling United and also enjoyed spells with Bromley and Maidstone United. He would later return to Bromley, first as coach and then as boss.
