After going up to the United Counties League Premier Division, one man brought in to help our cause was ex-Letchworth GC defender Terry Broom. After making his name as a full-back, Broom made the move inside and set up shop at centre half. While on the books at Boro’ the defender combined his football with a TEC course in electrical engineering. It meant he’d miss the odd Monday match – but it didn’t stop him becoming a firm favourite with the Broadhall Way faithful.
Terry Broom: Before Boro’
After starting out his football career at school in Stevenage, Broom caught the eye of the Luton Town boss at the time – Harry Haslam. Upon leaving the Hatters, Haslam took up the reins at Sheffield United and took Broom with him. In the defender’s own words, “I played for the reserves about 15 times. But when decision time came, they released me”. This experience, Broom is quoted in a 1980s programme as saying, saw him jack football in for a bit. He came back, however, with spells at Letchworth and Barton Rovers.
