Biography
One of our moves during the summer 2026 transfer window, we doubled up on our Northern Irish striker quota with the signing of Josh Magennis. Of course, by that we mean that Magennis would link up with fellow countryman Jamie Reid when crossing the threshold of Bragbury End. And it’d be a move completed in what some would view as the twilight of his career. At 35-years-old, you wouldn’t expect the player to be leading the line for many seasons to come. Which, we’ll make fully clear, is not an issue.
Magennis came to us from Exeter City; the Grecians having been relegated from League One at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. It completed a two-year stay in Devon, which won’t be one that gets cited in the pantheon of the greats. But his record suggests it was far from a disaster. And there’s no doubting the Bangor-born forward has plenty to offer at a later stage of his career. Indeed, the way in which he spoke upon joining left a good impression on us. The question was how words would translate into actions, however.
Josh Magennis: Before Boro’
This is a bit of a story, to be honest. Starting out, Magennis was originally a goalkeeper – until coaching staff suggested he wouldn’t make a fist of it at a decent level. Somehow, he ended up transitioning to centre forward and that was all it took to ignite his career. In 2007, he left his native Northern Ireland while still on youth terms at Glentoran to sign for Cardiff City (home nation #2, keep count here please). Here, he turned pro – but couldn’t force himself into contention. A loan spell at Grimsby aside, he’d have to look elsewhere. So, north of the border to Aberdeen he went.
Now on his third out of four home nations, Magennis built a career for himself in Scottish football. Six years and three clubs later, he came back down to England to complete the home nation set and really show what he was about. He did this notably with spells at Charlton, Bolton, Hull, and Wigan. Never prolific a goalscorer as such, he was a League One title winner at the latter two of those clubs. And that’s commendable in the least. OK, so he couldn’t make it a hattrick when signing for Exeter in 2024. But maybe Boro’ can oblige? Stranger things have happened, haven’t they?
