“He’s obviously a good Championship player”; not our words about Charlie Goode, but those of Carlton Palmer. It puts into the context the significance of the lad’s arrival at the Lamex in the week leading up to the beginning of the 2024-5 League One campaign. But where does the ex-England utility player come in? Well, Palmer had been talking earlier that summer about why Sheffield Wednesday should move in for Goode. In the end, he became our seventh incoming of the close season and stoked hopes that a decent campaign was on the horizon for Alex Revell‘s men.
Boro’ weren’t exactly short of defensive cover, although it’s fair to say that Terence Vancooten’s move to Burton Albion gave us a bit of thinking to do. Goode arrived on a one-year deal with a further year’s option; likely recognition that he’d faced a lot of time on the sidelines through injury prior to his arrival here at the Lamex. Revs said: “Charlie has missed a lot of football over the last four years, but he’s passed every medical and physical test we put in front of him. He’s a big character, a commanding presence in both boxes and he can play. Those are qualities we value.”
Charlie Goode: Before Boro’
The Owls’ apparent interest in signing Goode came after Brentford released the defender from his contract after a four-year stay. In that time, he featured very little for the Bees; instead picking up minutes at Sheffield United, Blackpool, and Wigan Athletic. The fee that took him to west London from Northampton Town in 2020 is reported to be in the region of £1m – so some serious wonga there. And, with the Cobblers, Goode saw success as the club were promoted to League One through the playoffs.
To go back further, Goode first started out as a youth player at hometown club Watford – before moving to Fulham and Harefield United. His first experience of senior football would indeed come in non-league circles; first with Hadley, then AFC Hayes and Hendon. The first big break of his fledgling career came in 2015 when Scunthorpe United signed him. It was a steep learning curve with the Iron; four years failing to see him fully establish himself. That’s when Goode signed for Northampton; a move that elevated his career and reputation.
