Toby Savin came in on loan in mid-February 2023; a time at which Boro’ were rattling through goalkeepers at a dizzying rate of knots. Joining us from Accrington Stanley, this stopper would end up as our fourth pick for our number one jersey with his debut away to Stockport County. And this was within pretty much the same number of weeks. The reason? Well, two loanee lads were taken out of first team contention by injuries within a stupidly short space of time. We can only hope we’re looking back on a more uneventful time for Savin at our club.
It’s not even as if Savin was out of the picture at the Wham Ground. Up to the point he moved south to help us out, the stopper had made 21 first team appearances for Accy during the 2022-3 campaign. It’s experience we wouldn’t turn down in a month of Sundays; not least as we had designs on promotion ourselves.
Toby Savin: Before Boro’
Savin first turned out in Accy colours in 2017, albeit as a youth team member. He would ultimately turn pro with the Lancashire club two years later. That was in June 2019. Three months later, he made his first team debut in the EFL Trophy. To further his development, he moved out on loan a couple more months later and gained first team action with Stalybridge Celtic. Before his time with Accy, meanwhile, Savin was a member of youth team academies at Crewe Alexandra, Everton, Wigan Athletic, and hometown club Southport.
