Finlay Johnson became one of the many youth team players given a chance to step up into the first team during the 2020-1 season. A midfielder by trade, the lad made it onto the bench for our match against Scunthorpe United on the last day of the season. While there was no first team debut that day, you can take it as a positive sign that he earned that place. And it set him up nicely to continue his development into the 2021-2 season.
It had come relatively early in his Boro’ career too. He started a two-year scholarship at the Lamex in June 2020; leaving Bedford Modern School after his GCSEs. At that point too, he’d already featured in the U18s as a 16-year-old.

Johnson’s stock was in fine fettle with the progress he’d made in our academy. While he had found a path up to the first team with us, however, he’d make the next step away from the Lamex. In July 2023, the lad went across the bridge to sunny south Wales; joining Cardiff City for what is described as an “an undisclosed compensation package” to ensure we didn’t lose out after helping get the player to a point where bigger clubs were interested.
