Colney Heath are almost within touching distance geographically, but we’re yet to go up against each other in a competitive match. It’s always possible that we’ll meet the Magpies in a pre-season friendly or Herts Senior Cup game. As members of the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, however, the league divide is still a large one; made wider by Boro’s promotion to League One in 2023. Not that we’re suggesting we check our footballing success for the sake of more regular meetings with the Magpies…

Who are Colney Heath?

The story of Colney Heath goes back a fair way, to be honest. The Magpies took flight (lol) in 1907; first competing in the Hatfield District League, before joining the Mid-Herts League after World War One. It’s then a leap forward to the other side of World War Two; stumbling over what is billed as one of the most successful period in their league membership. In that, they won the Division One and Premier Division – plus a couple of local cup competitions.

The Magpies moved into the Hertfordshire Senior County League in 1953; claiming the Division Two title at the first attempt. By the end of the decade, they had risen to the status of Premier Division champions too. The 1960s and 1970s were, however, a much leaner period for the club and they were playing as low down as Division Three in 1976. Ultimately, there’s not a huge amount more for us to add; not until 2000 at least, when the Magpies were promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League.

How to get to Colney Heath – Travel Information – Distance: 12 miles

By Road

If travelling by car, take the southbound A1(M) from Stevenage until you reach Junction 3. Exit the motorway and take the third exit at the roundabout for the A414. At the elongated roundabout after 1.2 miles, bear left from the main carriageway for Colney Heath.

Continue on this road for approximately 400 yards and the ground will be on your left just past the school.

Parking

There is a small car park at the venue and there should also be opportunities for street parking nearby.

By Rail

Station: WELHAM GREEN
Services to: STEVENAGE

Welham Green station is the nearest at around 2.5 miles. As you might imagine, however, this isn’t a short walk. So, it’s recommended you use bus or taxi services to complete your journey.

If you are walking, it’ll take the best part of an hour to get to the stadium. Turn left out of the station onto Dixons Hill Road and continue along through the village. Pass over the A1(M) and remain on this road when it becomes Tollgate Road as it bends round to the right.

Tollgate Road will take you right into the village and becomes High Street at the roundabout by the Crooked Billet pub. The ground will soon appear on your right.
