Not to be confused with their more recent namesake, this is the Woodford Town that we met just twice back in 1983; the Eastern Floodlit League pairing us together. A win and a draw against our Southern League opponents that season can rightly be held up as an impressive return for us. Mind you, we must admit to being a bit jealous of their 1986 appearance in the Anglo-Italian Cup. We’re not sure why they got that particular honour, however.

Club History

Who are Woodford Town?

The Woods were established in 1937; joining the London League in 1945 and going on to become founder members of the Delphian League in 1951. A decade later and the club would up sticks for the Metropolitan League, before moving on again to the Greater London League in 1967 for two seasons. It’s all a bit hectic here now. Getting themselves back in the Metropolitan League in 1970, the Woods were on the move once again in 1971 when they earned a place in the Southern League.

It was another one-season stay. After finishing bottom of the Southern Division, the Woods were playing in the Essex Senior League from 1976 onwards. Even now, however, it didn’t last. The club decided to join the Athenian League in 1979, before finding themselves back in the Southern League in 1982. One highlight in this era was their 1986-7 campaign; one in which they finished third in the Southern League South Division and made it into the FA Cup Round One for the first time.

This wasn’t enough to stop them going back to the Essex Senior League at the end of the season, though. And we’re not sure why that was the case. There’d be other bad news up on the horizon too. In 1993, they found themselves forced out of their Snakes Lane ground. Some more league movements would then see them play in the Spartan League, Spartan South Midlands League, and London Intermediate League. Then, in 1999, they returned to the Essex Senior League – before being voted out in 2003.

The Woods were then dissolved that summer; two new incarnations of the club following in the years since.
