Raunds Town Football Club

Whatever Boro’ could do, Raunds Town felt they could too; a United Counties League Division One title coming two years after us. We actually met them as part of our 1980-1 United Counties League Division One campaign. And we’d book-end our time in the competition by again playing the Shopmates as equals. This time, it’d be the 1983-4 Premier Division campaign. And this time, the club opted not to follow in our footsteps as we leapt up to the Isthmian League. the Shopmates, meanwhile, plugged away at the UCL for years to come.

Club History

Who are Raunds Town?

Formed in 1946, Raunds Town take their nickname – The Shopmates – from a local boot and shoe industry. A long-time member of the United Counties League, the club reportedly joined in 1896 at a time you’d have called it the Northamptonshire League. In 1950, the Shopmates returned to the United Counties League. It’s not known to us what they did in a big window of time between the wars. The essential thing here is that the Shopmates would stay in the UCL until 1996. At this point, they joined the Southern League.

The club returned to the UCL in 2000 to mixed results. In 2021, they moved again; this time to the Spartan South Midlands League.

How to get to Raunds Town

By Car

By Road

After heading north on the A1(M) and A1, come off at the exit for the B1048 and B645 towards St Neots and Kimbolton. Turn left for the B645 and continue on for 11.2 miles. Next, turn right into Church Road and then left for Church Street.

Go another two miles down here. You’ll then turn left for the B663 for 0.8 miles; taking your next right onto North Street after. Another 0.7 miles down the road, you’ll want the third exit at the roundabout for the B663.

The ground is here on the right – as you might have noticed…

There isn’t a station in the local area, which rules the train out for this trip.
