Stevenage is one of the more successful football clubs in League Two; Tier 4 in the English Football League system. Even though we already enjoyed title wins in the Conference and Isthmian League, we are still looking forward to adding more trophies at this football club. There is no reason to stop striving for success when the townspeople of Stevenage are in full support of their club.
Stevenage FC has been in the world of soccer for 44 years now. Throughout the years of battling it out in the field, it is inevitable to build rivalries after facing the same opponents time and time again. There are particular teams where the game’s intensity automatically increases a notch as they face us. Fights sometimes arise as no one wants to get the loss. Even these rivalry matches are just regular games, the atmosphere is close to a championship game because of the pride at stake. You may check out all the latest soccer betting odds at J9.com.
Getting to Know Stevenage FC’s Rivals
Hitchin Town
Hitchin Town are one of the original rivals of Stevenage. But it has been a while now since we faced each other again in a competitive game. Many fans are longing for these two clubs to renew their rivalry when we get to meet again in the regular season. For now, let us savour the times when both clubs get to clash in a pre-season game. It does not compare to the quality of real competition games, but we’ll take them for now.
The rivalry started during the 1990s when we finally became equals with the Canaries in the local football scene. Stevenage FC moved past Hitchin Town after continuous success during the 90s, highlighted by a 2-0 victory in October 1991.
Woking
Stevenage first encountered Woking in October 1987, and no one thought this would be the prelude to a rivalry that would span decades. Circumstances led them to dislike Stevenage; us winning the Conference before the Cards did, despite them being favourites. And they still haven’t won it! Up to this day, those days are still fresh in the fans’ minds; both Stevenage and Woking still getting fired up every time we meet on the field.
Barnet
Stevenage and Barnet are both Hertfordshire teams – and competition is inevitable. No one wants to get left behind and be referred to as the lesser team from Hertfordshire. It is honour and pride that pushes the shared hate for each other. Stevenage won the last four meetings against Barnet and have the upper hand. However, we can’t be complacent. If Barnet win the next meeting, people will easily forget our previous victories and only remember the recent loss. In rivalries, the one who laughs last has the upper hand.
Kettering Town
A lot of fans may consider this rivalry questionable, given the Poppies went missing for most of the 2000s. However, keep in mind that our match-ups with the Poppies before 2000 were always highly competitive. Their first-ever for the 1993-4 FA trophy is a classic up to this day. The most recent notable match that Stevenage and Kettering Town had was in late 2000. That was mainly due to Gazza being at their helm that time; the media all over it.
Cambridge United
The U’s are a known hater of Boro’. They may feel that, as they were working for promotion and getting back to a higher tier, we were always in their way. Unfortunately, Boro’ won’t hand it to them that easy, and a classic match is always on the brew when these two clubs meet.
Back in 2019-2020, Boro’ were having a terrible season. However, they still managed to register a 4-0 win against the U’s; serving as a bright spot that the Stevenage FC stadium can look forward to the following year. Lord knows how that loss stung so much for Cambridge United.
Conclusion
Boro’ fans may have a lot of other football clubs in mind as the team’s top rivals. We chose the football clubs mentioned above based on the history and the number of classic games both clubs have played against each other. There is an excellent chance that Stevenage FC will have new rivals in the years to come. Still, the team will welcome any challenge, and new rivalries are just additional motivation to get back up the table.
