At This Stage: September 2025

Look, we’re going to walk right on past the annual Green Day “wake up” joke and instead simply reflect on a very nice September 2025 for Boro’. Due to the scourge of international duty, we got only three more league outings under our belt. Nonetheless, we remained unbeaten and ended the month in a very favourable position. Not only do we hold a strong position at the summit of League One, but we’re enjoying one of our better starts to a league season.

In this calendar comparison, we now realise that Points Per Game is probably a good metric for us to include. But we can’t really be bothered to do that, so just take the raw maths as it comes.

League One comparison at this stage

Boro’ have never ended a September in such a fine position in League One. We go into October with 22 points already on the board, four more than at this stage in 2023-4. Our win count is at its highest for this point in the season calendar. And our goals for tally is just one shy of the 16 we had clocked up by the start of October 2011.

More please.

FACT:

For all the points gathered in both this season and 2023-4, our record at this stage still has one area in which we can’t brag. Under the leadership of Gary Smith, we’d got through September in one piece; unbeaten and with a relatively similar scoring/conceding record. Of course, a total of seven wins versus four is obviously preferable. And five draws do a lot of heavy lifting there. But just a reminder that it wasn’t all dreadful under Smiffy.

Are there any lookalike seasons?

The nature of the calendar from years gone by means that we start to bounce around a bit when it comes to the amount of games played. In addition to past League One efforts, there are a mere three other campaigns in which we’d played nine times in the league by the end of September.

We’re up on all three of them as things stand (comfortably so) – and two of the three are notable indeed. The 1995-6 season saw us go on to win the Conference for the first time. Meanwhile, we’d start relatively slowly in our eventual rise to League One during the 2011-2 campaign. Less nice is our record at the end of September 2021; a season in which Alex Revell would be fired and focus was very much on avoiding the drop come the end of term.

Now, this is where the ol’ PPG could come in handy. Because you can make an argument that we are enjoying one of our best starts ever to a season. And you don’t quite get that vibe from here. The bottom line is that a record-breaking run of clean sheets at the start of the 2007-8 campaign meant that Stimmo had us on a very nice trajectory come the end of September. BUT that comes from four extra games than where we’re at now.

On the flip side, you can also say that 1985-6 is the one true GOAT; Boro’ reaching the shores of October with a 100% league record still in perfect tact. We mean, look at those GF/GA numbers!

Actually, the same was true in 1984-5 – but we only managed to play five league matches come the end of September. All five were wins, however.

Similarly, PPG could do some heavy lifting here. Technically, our four-point haul from September 2020 is the worst. But that’s because the season started late and we only got three games out of the door by October. The 2019-20 season is the one that stands out as the worst, as you’ll expect – going into the third month of the campaign without a win. If we remember right, that was quite a bad September too.

You’ll also note the asterisks on a couple of seasons above. Unlike August’s round-up, we’ve now applied three points for a win to those efforts. It makes it easier to compare like-for-like.

September 2025 vs. Averages

A new feature for compari-purposes. Here’s a look at average numbers at the end of September over the years: games played, goals scored, points won. That kind of thing. Boro’s +/- for 2025 is seen in brackets and all values are rounded up/down.

Games Played: 9 (=)

Games Won: 4 (+3)

Goals Scored: 14 (+1)

Goals Against: 11 (-3)

Points Won: 15 (+7)
