Stevenage grabbed their first win of the Sky Bet League Two season thanks to goals from Newton, Smith and Kennedy. The win means Stevenage stay unbeaten through the initial few battles. Football betting tips on the eve of the game were definitely in favour of Boro.
For our second home game of the season, Darren Sarll rolled out one improvement from the side that drew at Colchester. Tom Pett came in for Harry Beautyman, while Matt Godden and Danny Newton proceeded with their strike association up top.
Inside the initial five minutes, Boro had the primary shot of the half. It was none other than Ronnie Henry who ended up driving towards goal from the right, before dragging his shot distressingly wide of the far post.
Stevenage were commanding the primary quarter of an hour. Splendid development play from Pett simply fresh, before dummying a pass to Samuel. The Welshman’s shot was obstructed, before the subsequent corner met Franks’ head who lamentably couldn’t convert.
Just before the half hour, a Luke Summerfield free kick from the edge of the box had Stevenage hearts in mouths. Joe Fryer hoped to have saved easily, before spilling the ball onto the post; the youthful keeper figuring out how to get to the ball before it went too far.
Stevenage: Goals and Dismissals
The hosts gave themselves a merited lead on 36 minutes through Danny Newton. The potent striker with a splendid bit of ability inside the container to score a magnificently completed throw over the Grimsby goalkeeper. Boro were looking sure and prone to score another.
A moment before half time, Jonathan Smith doubled Stevenage’s count, scoring on his home debut. A free kick in the box prompted Smith to wind up in the right place at the right time as the midfielder poked home into the bottom right.
The second half began as the first left off, with Stevenage responsible for the amusement and looking OK with the ball at feet. Grimsby’s disappointment was winding up progressively evident, and was demonstrated just before the hour mark. The Mariners’ number ten Sam Jones saw red after an elbow.
Matters were aggravated for Grimsby just a couple of minutes after the break. Sub Ben Kennedy entered the field and promptly had an effect. Getting the ball from the right, the forward jinked past various safeguards before finding the net with a deft, finessed finish into the far corner.
The guests pulled one back with 10 minutes to go. Stevenage, however, kept on controlling the ball and saw the diversion out to finish the game as 3-1 winners; the first three points of the season for Boro’.
