It was to be a “maiden loan move” for Charlie Wakefield as the summer 2017 transfer window came to its close. The hotly-rated young winger was one of two new additions for Boro’; gaffer Darren Sarll firming up his squad ahead of the long run of fixtures taking the club into the winter.
With brilliant speed and exquisite agility, Wakefield arrived at the Lamex with a bright future ahead of him. And, yet, Boro’ fans had to wait to see him in action. The player, who had recently signed a new deal with the Premier League champions, came into our ranks with a knock.
As such, his first few weeks at the squad were spent at his parent club as his rehabilitation continued. Those first few weeks ended up turning into a longer spell on the sidelines; the winger not making his first Boro’ appearance until late in 2017-8 League Two campaign. It was almost a case of having one chance to make a lasting impression.

Not making the impact either us or the lad would’ve liked during his time here, Wakefield went back to Chelsea. But his time at Stamford Bridge came to an end midway through the 2018-9 campaign; Coventry City snapping him up on an initial one-and-a-half-year deal to give the winger a chance to reboot his fledgling career in League One.
