Biography
Into the fold in September 2026, midfielder Matt Smith arrived on a free to further strengthen our squad in the early days of the 2026-27 campaign. By virtue of the fact it was a freebie, the summer transfer window being over was neither here nor there. You could view it as the final piece in the puzzle after a busy period of ins and outs. The 25-year-old wasn’t short on experience in the Football League, which is never something to be sniffed at. Luckily for us, previous team Wigan Athletic thought it sensible to let Smith leave the club after the 2025-26 campaign. The Wigan door shut, the Boro’ one opened.
Matt Smith: Before Boro’
Smith’s Football League pedigree came about through various loan spells between 2020 and 2022. Not that we say that as a bad thing, you understand. The midfielder started out on the books at Arsenal and cut his teeth out on loan. Swindon Town, Charlton Athletic, and Doncaster Rovers were the three destinations while he was with the Gunners. By then, he’d almost made the break into Arsenal’s first team. But it wasn’t quite to be. In summer 2023, he was released and moved north to join Wigan. He actually turned down a new deal there in summer 2026 and, following a trial at Lincoln, came to Broadhall Way.
