Biography
The need for goals at the start of the 2026-27 League One season is no doubt a strong reason why we swooped in for Michael Mellon. We’d already kicked off our campaign by the time he arrived; unbeaten but still showing some of the struggles up top that almost stifled our run to the playoffs the previous season. This was also another deal where Boro’ weren’t mucking about. No loans, no temporary deals; off we went to Burnley and said “we want to take him off your hands”. Terms got agreed – and that was enough to get us to beat an “array of clubs” to his signature.
Lower league fans may spot the name and think it rings a bell. Well, anyone familiar with the name Micky Mellon are right to assume a relationship. Michael is the son of, well, Michael Senior; a player who was notable for his time at Blackpool, Burnley and Tranmere Rovers in particular. Unlike father, our Mellon is a striker and noted for his “physicality, great technical ability and a strong eye for goal”. And, at just 22-years-old, there was plenty of road left ahead of him in career. Not that he would be limited on experience by the time he rocked up to Broadhall Way for the first time.
Michael Mellon: Before Boro’
Mellon actually played under his father while on loan from the Clarets to Oldham Athletic during the 2025-26 campaign. And it’d prove to be a good ‘un for him; 10 goals in 18 games as the Latics finished in the upper half of League Two. Of course, that was far from his first rodeo either. While opportunities at Turf Moor were non-existent, the forward gained experience across numerous other loan spells before his time with Oldham. There were two at Morecambe, for a start. Then there was a spell at Dundee. And let’s not overlook Stockport County or Bradford City.
All in all, a player who knows what League One is all about and what it takes to succeed as a striker in it.
